Oceano Dunes Dust Problem Discussed At Workshop

A so-called workable plan to reduce dust emissions from the Oceano Dunes Off Road vehicle area by 50 percent was the hot topic at last nights public workshop. Experts say planting native vegetation would be the most effective to reduce dust emissions that affect Nipomo Mesa residents living downwind from the dunes. That plan would affect roughly 500 acres. But some recreators believe the closure of the acreage would hurt the local economy. They would like to see a no-net-loss plan that would include opening an acre for every acre closed. The Air Pollution Control District will have a look at the vegetation plan and either approve it or send it back to the State Parks for changes.
