SLO City Councils Accepts New Social Media Policies

The San Luis Obispo City Council voted to adopt new social media policies. The vote came after Mayor Heidi Harmon blocked some members of the community on her social media accounts. According to the Tribune, the new policies advise council members not to block the public from social media posts or delete posts related to city matters. Clearly delineate private and city-related accounts. Official campaign accounts should also be labeled differently to clearly indicate those communications. Prior to the events that led to the vote, city staff had advised council members to assume any record of discussion on city business should be considered public.
