A Santa Maria man who was found to be legally insane when he killed a stranger with a hatchet 11 years ago will soon be released into the community. The court found a then 20-year-old Nicholas Bendle had suffered a psychotic break at the time of the attack. He was sentenced to a state hospital. After completing several mental health transition programs, he was eventually found not to be a danger to the health and safety of others.
