A former Santa Maria resident is facing up to a year in prison, after admitting he shot and killed an elephant seal near San Simeon last year. 30-year-old Jordan Gerbich entered a plea deal with prosecutors. He pled guilty to a single misdemeanor count of the taking of a marine mammal. Elephant seals are a protected species. Gerbich is scheduled to be sentenced in April.
